Time Blocking Tips For The Work-At-Home Mom
What is time-blocking?
Time blocking is a method of scheduling your daily tasks into specific units of time. Instead of making a to-do list and winging it throughout the day, time blocking gives you a set amount of time to get each task done. It is a great way to stay organized throughout your day, so you can complete all the tasks you need to do.
With time blocking, you will give an allotted amount of time for each task, such as meetings, emails, projects, going to the gym, kids activities, Lunchtime, and so on.
Time blocking can be great for many different careers or even for a stay-at-home mom. I personally learned these time-blocking tips from my business coach in Real Estate. In fact, this is how Elon Musk and Bill Gates schedule their week (and if it works for them, count me in!).
Benefits of time-blocking
If you are here, you’re probably looking for ways to make your day as stress-free as possible. While also maximizing your productivity. There are many benefits to scheduling your week ahead of time, specifically by time blocking.
Time blocking your schedule is actually fantastic for ALL MOMS. We always wish there were more time in the day to get everything done, including making time for ourselves. This is the best and most efficient way to do that!
With these time-blocking tips, you will be able to know exactly how your week is planned ahead of time. You will stress less about trying to fit in your to-do list each day.
Giving yourself specific amounts of time to do a particular task will help you focus on it so you can complete it to the best of your ability.
When you give yourself specific amounts of time, it is best practice to not multitask during that time. Those time frames tell your brain that you need to complete that task only. Thus leaving less room for error. Or forgetting to do something.
With kids, there will be moments when your schedule may be thrown off. With time-blocking, you will at least have an outline of your top priorities to follow as best as possible.
How to time block
Ok, now we get into the nitty-gritty of how to actually do time blocking. It’s easier than it looks once you get the hang of it. Here are my top time-blocking tips
- It is suggested that you schedule every weekend so you will be set for the coming week. (I usually do it on Sundays)
- Figure out all the tasks and work you must complete for the week and prioritize them.
- Schedule your most crucial uninterrupted work in time periods you know are consistent and able to focus. For moms, this is usually during nap times. Here are more Time Management Tips Work-At-Home Moms.
- Make sure to account for any breaks and lunchtime.
- Overestimate how long each task will take. If the job involves driving somewhere, account for the time it will take to get there and back.
- Using google calendar is recommended. This way, you will have it on your phone, so google calendar can alert you when it’s time to move on to the next task.
- Schedule the tasks into your calendar using color-coded blocks.
- Do not overlap time blocks. It can confuse your brain when you see the overlapped blocks.

Time blocking categories
There are 4 main categories when color coding your schedule. These are the colors I like to use and what I use them for. You can change the colors to ones that are easily understandable to you.
Red: Vacations, holidays, playtime with kids, any breaks including lunch, chores, admin work for business, emails, business coaching, business training, office events, and other tasks of this nature.
Blue: Business projects, business calls with clients, networking, social media activities (taking photos, making videos, editing, etc.), client follow-up, and any tasks that assist in making money.
Green: Client appointments, client converting, posting on social media, meetings with other businesses or clients, negotiations, and all activities that involve making money.
Yellow: Children’s activities (sports, dance, etc.), your personal activities (gym, yoga, facials, etc.), doctor’s appointments, errands, and other activities for you or the family out of the house.
Effective time blocking tips
To make time blocking effective for you, it is always best to be realistic with the chunks of time you assign for each task.
Also, be respectful of your time. Since you only have a certain amount of time per task, try to be as intentional as possible.
Putting down your phone (unless needed to get a job done) will help you focus on the task at hand.
The biggest suggestion to make it really work for you is to be strict with yourself and stick to your schedule as much as possible.
If you get thrown off at some point of the day do not give up on the rest of the day. Try to pick up where you left off when possible and reschedule as needed.
