Baby Bath Time Essentials
Bath time is the perfect start to a good nighttime routine. It will help your baby get clean and relax after a long day of playing. And who doesn’t love the smell of a clean baby?
With so many baby bath time essentials available, it can be hard to know what you really need. Here’s a list of the most important baby bath essentials that will make bathing your little one a breeze, from bathing a newborn to an older baby.

Newborn Bath Time Essentials
Bathing a newborn can be intimidating, but it’s actually so easy and enjoyable for both of you. These products with make washing your little angel a breeze.
These supplies can be used all the way up until your baby reaches the stage of taking a bath in the regular bathtub, and some will continue to be used as your baby gets older.
Baby bathtub
A baby tub is a must-have for bath time. It’s much safer and easier to use than a regular bathtub, especially for newborns and younger babies.
There are three types of tubs that are ideal for a little one. It will just depend on your preference and tub situation.
- Adjustable Grow With Me Bathtub: This tub will make the newborn to older baby stage easier as it can adjust from lying to sitting.
- Baby Bath Support: This is more of a relaxing support chair for your baby to lay in in the tub and can be used up until 6 months.
- Sink Bath Pad: If it’s easier for you to bathe your baby in the sink, this bath pad is the way to go! It’s soft and supportive.
Baby shampoo and body washes
Use a gentle baby shampoo and body wash that won’t irritate your baby’s delicate skin. I go for products that have natural ingredients, such as Hello Bello or Honest. I can trust the safe ingredients in these products.
Bath thermometer
A bath thermometer can help ensure the water temperature is safe and comfortable for your baby. As a mother, the bath thermometer comforts me knowing the water is not too hot or cold for my little one.
Soft washcloths
Soft washcloths are gentle on your baby’s skin and make it easier to clean those hard-to-reach areas. I also recommend using the washcloths to keep your little one warm while bathing them. It’s unsafe to completely cover your baby with water, so draping a warm wet washcloth over your little one’s tummy is best. Bamboo Washcloths are my favorite. They are so soft and the most durable washcloth.
Soft sponge
A baby sponge is a great option for cleaning your baby. I prefer it over a washcloth. These all natural sponges get nice and bubbly and are very soft, making it easier to clean baby skin. They also dry up after the bath to ensure they do not have a mildew smell.
Hooded baby towels
Hooded towels are perfect for keeping your baby warm and cozy after bath time. I favor hooded bamboo towels because they are more absorbent than any other, and they are super soft and warm.
Cradle cap shampoo and brush
If your baby gets cradle cap, do not worry yourself. It happens to many babies, and luckily it is easy to get rid of. A cradle cap shampoo and a cradle cap brush will help clear it up within a few days.
My daughter got cradle cap, and these products cleared it up so quickly. Keep in mind that it can come back at any time(even months later), so keep the shampoo and brush in case it does come back.
Baby Bath Essentials
Once your baby can sit up independently, you can start bathing them in the regular bathtub. You will use many of the same products already listed, plus a few more.
If you feel more comfortable putting your baby in a sit-up baby bath seat, there are many great ones. Otherwise, here are all the essentials to safely bathe your older babies.
Bath grip mat
Using a bath mat is essential to bath time. You will have a wet slippery baby and want to minimize any risk of slipping and falling, especially as they start crawling, standing up, and walking.
Bath spout cover
A bath spout cover can prevent your baby from hitting their head on the hard faucet and help prevent burns from hot water.
Bath toys
We can’t forget the bath toys! Bath toys make bath time more fun and entertaining for your baby. Look for toys that are safe and easy to clean.
I do not recommend the rubber squeeze toys with a little hole in them. They very easily grow mold on the inside, and you do not want your baby putting their mouth on that. They will inevitably put toys in their mouth, especially rubber ones.
Mesh toy storage
Using a hanging mesh storage bag to store the toys is the way to go. This way, the toys can drain and dry until they are used again.
Rinsing cup
A bath rinsing cup is the easiest way to rinse your baby’s hair or body. A rubber bath rinser is perfect because you can squeeze it for a more direct and steady stream of water since most babies do not enjoy water pouring down their faces.
Baby shower cap
A baby shower cap is beneficial if your little one hates water flowing down their face when rinsing. It will keep soapy water from going into your baby’s eyes.
Post Bath Time Essentials
After your baby is done bathing, it is time for your after-bath routine. I know.. so many different routines to follow! But routines are essential for your baby to learn security and emotional stability.
These after-bath-time essentials will make your routine easy and supply your baby with all the grooming and skincare products they need.
Baby lotion
After bath time, use a gentle baby lotion to keep your baby’s skin moisturized and soft. There are two types of lotions that I like to keep on hand.
Tubby Todd all-over ointment is a product I can not live without for my daughter. It is incredible for the dry months, so my daughter’s skin doesn’t get chapped. It is also fantastic for baby acne, drool rash, and more.
It’s also best practice to always have body lotion on hand to moisturize your baby daily.
Diaper cream
Diaper cream or diaper spray (I LOVE this spray cream!)is essential. If your baby has a diaper rash or is prone to it, diaper cream can soothe and protect their delicate skin.
Hair Brush
Depending on the type of hair your baby has will determine what kind of brush to use. Newborns with very little hair should use a very soft bristle hair brush. If your infant or baby has a decent amount of hair, you can use a detangling brush or comb.
Best Practices For Bathing Your Baby
Here is a step-by-step guide to giving your baby a bath. The steps will be the same whether you have a newborn or an older baby.
Remember to never leave your baby unattended during bath time, even for a moment. Always keep one hand on your baby and never leave them alone in the bathtub, even if there’s only a small amount of water. With these baby bath time essentials I have listed, you can enjoy a safe and delightful bath time with your little one.
- Prepare your baby’s pajamas, diaper, lotion, diaper rash cream, and brush where you will be getting your baby ready after the bath.
- If the weather is colder, turn on the house’s heater so your baby is comfortable in the tub and after their bath.
- Fill up the tub a few inches and use the thermometer to gauge the temperature.
- While the tub is filling, gather the shampoo/body wash, sponge, washcloth, rinsing cup, and anything else you will be using while bathing your baby (to make life easy on you, keep it all in a basket by the tub)
- Put your baby in the bath, and cover their torso with a freshly warm wet washcloth (dunk the cloth in the warm water throughout bath time to keep it warm for the baby)
- Wash your baby’s body using a sponge or washcloth.
- Wash your baby’s hair last. Once their hair is wet, they tend to get cold faster.
- Take your baby out of the tub and put them straight into a dry hooded towel.
- Keep your baby wrapped in the towel, open the bottom to put the diaper on, and use diaper rash cream if needed.
- Take out their legs one by one to lotion up as needed.
- Dry their hair (if any) and take off the towel.
- Put your baby straight into their pajamas.
- Brush your baby’s hair.
- Cuddle your little one and enjoy their amazing clean baby smell.
Final Thoughts
Bath time should be and will be an enjoyable experience for you and your baby by using these baby bath time essentials. Bathing your baby should be done at least every other night, especially as they get older and play more.
Creating a routine with bath time leading into your little one’s bedtime routine will ensure your baby gets a good night’s rest.
