As a mother, I can tell you the best way to get out of the house quickly is to already have everything packed in your diaper bag. Most of these items you will always leave in your diaper bag so you’re always prepared.
This checklist has all the newborn diaper bag essentials you will need. From feedings, changing’s (diaper and clothes), comfort, and entertainment, this list has it all!
If you’re anything like me, you will want a well-stocked diaper bag that is always ready to go. No more forgetting things when you’re already halfway to your destination!

Diaper Bag
Of course, we have to start off with the diaper bag. The ideal diaper bag is one with lots of pockets, including one with insulation for keeping things cold such as bottles or milk.
When packing for a newborn, you will have a lot of stuff to pack. As your baby gets older, you won’t need to pack as much, but with a newborn, it’s best to have more than you need rather than find yourself in a situation without something you could have packed.
Finding a comfortable diaper bag is also essential, as you will carry it often. A diaper bag backpack will make your life much easier. If you need to carry multiple things or even just your baby, wearing your diaper bag is the most convenient.
Bonus points if it has stroller straps.
This is one of the best diaper bags I have used. It’s cute and has everything you look for in a good bag. It also comes with a detachable pacifier case. Plus, it has a spot for my laptop, which is very convenient!
Diapers & Baby Wipes
Can’t forget the diapers or wipes. These are definitely the most used diaper bag essentials, so you always want to keep them stocked.
I recommend always keeping a minimum of 6 diapers in the bag. When you get home, it is best practice to restock them. It’s essential to always have enough diapers so you don’t have to worry about them as you rush out the door.
I always keep a pack of wipes in the bag as well. There’s no need to take them out until they are empty.
Wipes are also handy for cleaning babies’ hands, face, or other messes.
Pampers Pure and Hello Bello are my favorite wipes. They are gentle on your baby’s bottom and good for the baby’s sensitive skin.
They also have the perfect amount of moisture. I am not fond of wipes that are basically dry.

Diaper Rash Spray
Some people like diaper rash ointment, but I swear by diaper rash spray! It’s much less messy and easy to target the problem areas with full coverage.
This Boogie diaper rash spray is THE BEST! It is free from parabens, dyes, and talc, and the fact that it is a spray also means no cross-contamination, unlike wipeable diaper rash cream. I can tell it is also soothing when I use it on my daughter.
Change Of Clothes
Having extra clothes is also a must-have item. You will find yourself in random situations where your little one will need a change.
With a newborn, sometimes the most unexpected things happen. Such as spitting up all over themselves, a bottle leaking all over them, and of course, the dreaded diaper blowouts.
In any case, you want to be prepared because unexpected things do happen.
You will have to laugh about some of the experiences you find yourself in. It might be a mess, but at least you’re prepared with extra outfits. I always opt for an easy change like an extra onesie.
Plastic Bag For Soiled Clothes
Plastic bags or a gallon-size Ziploc bag is a good idea for your newborn’s diaper bag.
If you find yourself in a situation with soiled clothes of any kind, having a bag to put them in will keep your diaper bag clean from those messy clothes or dirty diapers.
You can use a plastic bag from a store or keep a roll of doggy poo bags in your diaper bag.
Changing Pad
Some diaper bags will come with a reusable portable changing pad for diaper changes. However, if yours doesn’t, here is a fantastic foldable changing pad that is slim enough to keep in your diaper bag.
A changing pad can be used anywhere. They are fabulous for diaper-changing stations in public restrooms, or anywhere you are out and about.
I even used them to change my daughter in my trunk in certain situations.
In the newborn months, I always like to keep some disposable changing pads or doggy pee pads in my car and diaper bag too.
There’s nothing worse than a diaper blowout in a car seat or a super messy blowout that you have to change on the go. Disposable pads are terrific for those messes, so you can toss them after you’re finished.
I liked to line my newborn’s car seat with one as well. You can fold it to fit in the car seat where your baby’s back and bottom sit where it won’t bother them. Because these types of blowouts do happen… unfortunately.
Baby Blanket
Being prepared with a blanket is essential.
Depending on the time of year, I like to switch between a light blanket, such as a soft muslin blanket (which also doubles as a swaddle blanket) during the warm weather or a warm fuzzy blanket during cold weather.
This is another one of those items that I always leave in the diaper bag. (until it needs to be washed)
Blankets are handy for nap time on the go, laying the baby on, keeping them warm in an unexpected situation, or even covering the stroller from the sun if you didn’t pack a car seat cover.
Light & 
Soft Muslin Baby Blanket
Burp Cloth
If you have a baby that is prone to spitting up, having a burp cloth or 2 is a good idea to keep In your newborn diaper bag.
They are also handy for cleaning up unwanted messes.
Car Seat Cover
A car seat cover is an essential item to have for a newborn. While your new baby is still tiny, their eyes are sensitive to the sun, so having a car seat cover to create shade will make all the difference for your little one.
Car seat covers are also excellent for dimming the outside light so your baby can nap more comfortably.
Baby Bottles
Depending on your preferred feeding method, you can determine if you will need bottle essentials.
If you are formula feeding or using breast milk from pumping, having bottles is a must!
If you will only be out for a short time, 1 bottle will be fine. However, I always like to pack for just-in-case moments, so packing 2 is a good idea.
Bottle Warmer
If your baby drinks from a bottle having a cordless bottle warmer is a game changer! No more trying to find somewhere to warm up water or milk or keeping it in an insulated cup, hoping it will still be warm when your baby needs it.
This bottle warmer has different settings depending on your baby’s preference, and it works so well! This bottle warmer is also fabulous for taking on vacations.
Formula Container
Since you will be packing lots of items in your newborn diaper bag, having a small container for formula will help save space.
This fantastic formula container is perfect for pre-weighing your formula and is easy to use. Once your baby gets older, you can also use it as an on-the-go snack container!
Nursing Cover
If you are a nursing mama, having a nursing cover can be pretty helpful in public places.
I love this nursing cover because it gives you a peek hole to see your baby and help them get into a good position to feed. It also gives them space so the cover is not bothering their face while eating and enough room to not get overly hot on warm days.
Toys
For a newborn, you won’t necessarily need to pack many toys. A black and white hanging toy with textures is plenty for entertaining your little one.
The best part about taking a newborn out and about is they sleep most of the time!
Extra Pacifier
If your baby is a pacifier lover, it’s always safe to bring a couple of extras. Like most things you pack for a newborn, it’s better to be safe than sorry.
Many diaper bags come with a cute detachable pacifier holder too.
Portable Sound Machine
Using a Portable sound machine is very helpful for getting your newborn to sleep in their car seat or stroller. My daughter is a toddler now and it still works for her!
Sunscreen
During the warm and sunny months, it’s absolutely essential to pack sunscreen in your newborn diaper bag. Since newborns are still brand new and have such sensitive skin, I really love this all organic sensitive skin sunscreen.
It is a mineral-based sunscreen that only uses a couple ingredients and is reef safe! Which is a huge plus! As a mama who lives in California I slather this on my baby daily in the hot months.
Stroller Fan
Having an attachable stroller fan is an item I can not live without in the warm months!
If you’re anything like me, I always worry if my baby is too hot or cold. So having a little fan always comforts me when it’s hot out. A comfortable baby is a happy baby.
Final Thoughts
It might seem like a lot of stuff to pack, but all these items are necessary. You never know what situations will arise or the mood your baby will be in, so having all of these products packed in your diaper bag will make getting out of the house so much less stressful. You will always be prepared!
Keep in mind, too, as your baby gets older, you won’t need as many products, but while they are small, it’s better to have too much than not enough.
